Art Practice class of 2024 MFA Exhibition Open at BAMPFA May 1 to July 21

May 9, 2024

Titled MITH & CO, the fifty-fourth annual UC Berkeley Master of Fine Arts Exhibition is now open at BAM/PFA. Four artists—Salimatu Amabebe, Anamaya Farthing-Kohl, Valencia James, and Nivedita Madigubba—are showing visually and conceptually complex multi-media installations produced over their two years in our MFA Program.

"MITH & CO." takes its name from a manufacturing business's sign located nearby the MFA studios at Richmond Field Station. Missing the first letter S from "Smith & Co," the name "MITH & CO." read aloud forms a homophone with the Spanish word mítico, meaning mythic. Exploring themes of queer kinship, myth-making, postcolonial entanglements, late capitalist critique, and Black self-determination, this exhibition celebrates new bodies of work that represent the culmination of two years of intensive study through the MFA program at UC Berkeley. We are pleased and proud to have collaborated with BAMPFA Curatorial Associate at BAMPFA Matthew Villar Miranda.

The artists will speak about their work in the museum's Crane Forum on Friday, May 10 from 6 to 7 p.m.
