Set in the coastal city of Eleusis, Greece (30 mins from Athens) full of history and intrigue, students will have an extraordinary opportunity to create a public artwork in an international setting. Eleusis was named the “European Capital of Culture” (ECoC) for 2023, meaning there will be an influx of artists and arts events during Summer 2023. As a part of this, students will engage with the culturally diverse communities of Eleusis, exploring both the historical importance of Eleusis as the center of the ancient “Eleusininan Mysteries,” and also learning about Eleusis’ contemporary issues surrounding immigration and environmental justice. After establishing relationships with residents and community groups through listening and learning, students will produce a collaborative art installation in the public sphere.
