Anne Walsh is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and performer who most often engages collaborators in the retelling of histories and the re-mediation of documents. She is particularly drawn to the processes of aging, translation, formations of gender, and (art) historical narration, and to the illegible, unrepresented, or resistant figures these processes produce. Her methods push research toward performance and auto/biography toward fiction. Her fictions generate soil for the unstable territory between the documentary and the imaginary, the scholarly and the obsessive, the intimate and the historical.
From 2009-2019, Walsh pursued an extended, unruly engagement with Leonora Carrington’s novel The Hearing Trumpet, repeatedly disassembling and reconstituting her novel through exhibitions, performances, images, texts, and video. The project culminated in Hello Leonora, Soy Anne Walsh (2019), an artist’s book published by No Place Press/MIT Press.
Walsh’s recent published writings include essays and criticism for multiple exhibition catalogues, and the Brooklyn Rail, The Back Room,San Francisco Review of Whatever, Open Space, The Brooklyn Rail,Art Practical, Artbound, and X-Tra Contemporary Art Journal
She has exhibited and performed at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Berkeley Art Museum/PFA, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Hayward Gallery in London, Artists Space NYC, the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, the Royal College of Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, SF, and the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre, among others. Walsh served as an editor of X-Tra Contemporary Art Journal from 1997 to 2004 and is currently contributing editor for the San Francisco Review of Whatever. She has also curated exhibitions at venues including the University Art Gallery at UC Irvine, OR Gallery in Vancouver, and New Langton Arts in San Francisco.
