Big Give: Support 100 Years of Creativity

Help us reach 100 gifts in honor of 100 years! Make your gift during Big Give on March 14 to support students and faculty in Art Practice.

The Department was founded in 1923, when very few universities in the country had formal art education programs. The first Department Chair was Eugen Neuhaus, an oil painter born in Germany who taught at UC Berkeley from 1907 to 1949.

One hundred years later, we are one of the premier programs in fine art in the country.  And we are also one of the fastest-growing majors on campus: 12% year over year for the last five years!

We have built a legacy of pathbreaking faculty and acclaimed alumni, including Chiura Obata, Worth Ryder, Elmer Bischoff, Jim Melchert, Peter Volkus, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, and Sylvia Lark to name a few.

Today, the department's faculty is composed of renowned and award-winning practicing artists including Al-An deSouza, Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller, Greg Niemeyer, Brody Reiman, Stephanie Syjuco, Anne Walsh, Craig Nagasawa, Indira Martina Morre, and a wealth of talented lecturers and staff. This year we are proud to welcome Luanne Redeye, Darian Longmire, Mores McWreath.

Gifts to Art Practice amplify Berkeley’s international leadership in art education. Your support invests in new faculty, launching their teaching and research. It expands programs that directly benefit students. It provides funding for new creative research and upgrades for labs and teaching facilities.
