The Art Practice Department is a β€œhigh demand major” which means that not all students who apply to the major will be accepted. Continuing undergraduates are encouraged to apply as early as possible as long as they have completed the prerequisites, and are not allowed to apply to the major past the beginning of junior year starting in Fall 2023. Second semester juniors and seniors at any level are not allowed to apply.

AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY TO THE MAJOR?

  • Freshman and sophomores are encouraged to apply as early as possible as long as they are enrolled in or have completed the three course requirements (ART 8, a lower division studio course, and an Art History course).

  • Second semester sophomores who have not completed or are currently enrolled in all three required courses as of Spring 2023 will need to ensure they are enrolled in them for Fall 2023. Summer Sessions also offer ART 8 and lower division courses that will count toward the major.

  • First semester juniors: it is the last semester you can apply to the major. If you are not currently enrolled in or have not completed the three course requirements, you cannot apply to the major.

  • Second semester juniors: if you are not currently enrolled in or have not completed the three course requirements, it is too late to apply to the major. Note: starting in Fall 2023, second semester juniors cannot apply to the major.

  • Seniors are not allowed to apply to the major.

Intended double majors: Prioritize the Art Practice major FIRST, as the required courses are difficult to get into and you should focus on Art Practice if you want it as one of your majors. For more information on double majoring, consult the L&S page.

Your portfolio submission will play a significant role in the review process and we encourage you to submit your strongest work along with thoughtful writing responses. Please remember that the Art Practice Department is a fine arts program and we do not focus on design, illustration, character animation, and commercial art fields.
