Juneteenth: Resonance and Diffusion
Juneteenth celebrates the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. In 2015, Dr. Reginold Royston and Dr. John Scott, Berkeley grad students at the time, produced an innovative video for an Art Practice course on Data Culture about the history of Juneteenth. They examine why the Emancipation Proclamation took over two years to reach enslaved people in Texas from Lincolnโs desk.
To this day, information does not always reach the people most in need of that information on time. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, we have yet to overcome systemic racism.
