None but the Rain features work from Isaiah Acosta and Julia Kerley, awardees of the Spring 2023 Ramos Foundation Award. Both artists consider the slippery passage of time, the complexity of identity while shifting through various life transitions, and the role of ritual in both.
Julia Kerley (Los Angeles, 1999) is an Oakland based artist making primarily ceramic objects and experiential installations. Through a process based practice they explore themes including symbol-making, personal memory, objecthood, and ritual. Often constructing heavily textured, modular ceramic vessels based on historic references, the resulting objects represent experiments in the invention of self and the complexity of identity. Through this queering between self and object, Julia re-creates these ritual objects in service of a re-imagined history rich in multiplicity.
Isaiah Acosta (Mesa, 2000) is a Mexican American mixed-media artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in Berkeley, he intertwines his art with his identity, delving into Queer identities through the lenses of Design and Cinema. Across film, sculpture, and photography, Acosta's work embodies a cohesive aesthetic that transcends mediums. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2022 with a degree in Fine Arts and Media Studies, honing his skills and expanding his artistic vision. Acosta's multidisciplinary approach invites viewers to contemplate the intersections of identity, culture, and creativity within his sculptural compositions.
