Cathy Lu Joins the Department as Assistant Professor of Ceramics

August 20, 2025

Cathy Lu is a ceramic based artist whose work manipulates traditional Chinese art objects and symbols as a way to deconstruct assumptions about Asian American identity and cultural authenticity. By creating ceramic based sculptures and large-scale installations, Lu explores what it means to be both Asian and American, while not being entirely accepted as either. Unpacking how experiences of immigration, cultural hybridity, and cultural assimilation become part of the larger American identity is central to her work.

Lu has presented their work locally and internationally, with recent exhibitions at the United States Embassy, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Asian Art Museum. She has an upcoming residency at EKWC Ceramics Residency in Oisterwijk in the Netherlands next summer.

Lu received their BFA in Ceramics & BA in Chinese Language, Culture, and History at Tufts University and an MFA in Ceramics from San Francisco Art Institute.
