Programs and Courses
Welcome to the Department of Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley.
The Department of Art Practice actively promotes a free, creative environment as well as an intellectual context for artistic experimentation. As a laboratory for experimentation and cross-disciplinary art making, the Department of Art Practice provides a forum in which to set forth new ideas in art and creative action.
Since our inception in 1923, our focus has been on the teaching of Fine Arts in a studio setting under the guidance and mentorship of professional artists. All members of our faculty maintain active careers beyond the classroom. The department offers a wide range of approaches in painting, printmaking, sculpture/ installation (wood, metal, ceramics, mixed media), video art, graphic animation and game design, performance art and interactive digital art.
Studios for advanced undergraduates are available on a competitive basis on campus. Our MFA studios are spacious, private, and set in a beautiful waterfront location at UC Berkeley's Richmond Field Station.
