The inherent contradiction of ceramic practice is that plastic clay is malleable, responsive, and constantly changing through the actions of the maker, yet fired ceramic is static, inflexible, fragile and fixed. The (kinetic) Dirt Show looks at ceramic objects that defy this convention. These artists ask you as the audience to engage with their work and put ceramics into a productive flux, showing us that the kiln fired end products can still be as responsive, engaging and adaptable as clay once was.
The Dirt Show is the continuation of a tradition started by Professor Emeritus of Ceramics Richard Shaw. This year’s iteration, curated by Lecturer in Ceramics Erik Scollon, features outstanding students from a year of ceramics making at Cal, and invites viewers to participate in several interactive projects.
Please join us for an Opening Reception on Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 from 4 – 7 pm in the Worth Ryder Art Gallery.
